The title of his exhibition is “Opus II” and eight impressive black/white photo images will be on show. With “Opus II” Apart Media opens a second gallery in town, besides Studio Apart, Prinsengracht 715. Studio Apart-2 will mainly focus on photography.

Daan Noppen’s “Opus II” embroiders on the theme of a previous series of artworks, carrying the title “Opus I”.
With his fascination for mythological and divine women, Daan Noppen places angels in his artwork whose appearance within the photographs reminds us of paintings from the Renaissance period. Although the manifestation of these characters seem to construct a Western iconological reference, the women portrayed are all Chinese.

Through the placement of such figures the artist creates an entirely new cultural context. Various cultural aspects are being mixed within one picture and, thus, a new world is created.

Daan Noppen uses his imagery as a metaphor for a new, contemporary authenticity. On a global scale cultures are getting increasingly intermingled, and instead of seeing this as a loss of authenticity, Daan Noppen experiences it as a development that must lead to a redefinition of the meaning of ‘authenticity’. The authenticity of a country or a nation is not a static principle but according to the artist, it is subject to influences that will result in an adapted perception of what this authenticity comprehends.

According to Daan Noppen he approaches his work more like a painter than as a photographer, therefore, he calls himself ‘image maker’.

Daan Noppen has exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. At this moment, his projects (Hypervoids and Limpiando Ventanas -windshield cleaners-) are on show in the Museo de Ciudad in Mexico City.
